July 21st, 2017 was a Friday just like any other at the Elk Grove headquarters of the Des Plaines Office Equipment Company. Summer was in full swing. The company’s sales numbers were good. The leadership and staff were preparing to head home for a relaxing weekend with their families. But on that fateful Friday, at 4:50pm, everything changed for us. In the blink of an eye, Mother Nature decided to put on a full display of power and fury as a tornado ripped the roof off the northwest suburban building that had served as the home of DPOE for more than 20 years. Water poured into the office space and warehouse causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage. Employees watched on helplessly as they scrambled to protect themselves and their co-workers from injury.
As quickly as it began, it was over. In a matter of minutes, the entire company’s operations were brought to a standstill. The offices were a total loss. Everything in the warehouse was a write off. Most companies would see this happen and be at a loss about what to do next, but that is not how Chip and Vic Miceli operate their business. Once seeing to it that all of their employees were safe and unharmed, the co-owners sprang into action to make sure that their company was able to be open the following Monday to provide the products and services that have kept us in business for over 60 years. Working around the clock, utilizing the same systems and services that we offer to our hundreds of business partners, our team was able to make sure that there was absolutely no interruption in service to our customers.
As Monday morning rolled around, every member of the DPOE team went to work to pick up right where they left off Friday afternoon. Some were now in our Rockford office, some were in our Chicago office, some were at our sister company in Indiana, and some were working from home, but DPOE was open for business. How many companies would have been able to be up and running after a colossal act of nature, without a single interruption? Thanks to the outstanding back-up systems we utilized, we were able to maintain business as usual without losing a single piece of information or a single email.
As we approach the one-year anniversary of this event, DPOE has a new company headquarters in Carol Stream and business is as strong as ever. We are expanding in all of our markets and we continue to provide the high level of service that our company has always been known for.
